"a superbly talented singer-songwriter with a unique point of view" - GodIsInTheTVZine

“Gloriously wonky, lo-fi connection between indie-pop and synth-pop that just fits where the world is right now.” - Louder The War

“His identity as a songwriter is unbreakable” - Balloon Machine

Tom John Hall is an independent pop musician hailing from Derby, UK. His 2020 debut, My Big Album was released through local not-for-profit imprint Year Of Glad on vinyl + digital, garnering praise and raised eyebrows from the likes of Louder Than War, Secret Meeting, GodIsInTheTv, Unsigned Guide and Gigwise, along with features on BBC Intro in the Midlands, Amazing Radio’s Indie list, XFM and Boogaloo Radio.
After a brief stint producing a queer pop masterwork with longtime collaborator and label-mate YAY MARIA, Tom has undergone another reinvention by way of THUNDERCHILD - a solarpunk / sci-fi concept album set in the not too distant tomorrow. The album follows starcrossed best friends Panjy, an eco-anarchist on the surface of a dwindling Earth, and Bo, a research scientist stranded on a distant moon, in a story of messages intercepted in the void. Expect mycological computation, deep space exploration vessels, a miniature AI mascot named Robobo and threads that intertwine to build new visions for the future.
Traversing wonky electronica and nostalgic synth pop, the record is a departure from the guitar laden introspection of past releases. From the raucous timpanis of its opening track to a sugary robotic falsetto solo to genuine audio recordings from Mars, nothing has been held back in an effort to build a universe for the record to enthusiastically explore.
The heavy lean in to the theme has been carried out with care and a knowing nod - THUNDERCHILD is closer to Douglas Adams than Isaac Asimov, and spreading a little cosmic joy is the primary mission objective. As for its musical influence, TJH was played a casette tape of Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds in an inexplicable yearly assembly ritual as a child, and it shows. Drawing guidance from XTC, Coheed & Cambria and Kate Bush, a unique pallete has been curated here - a true one off.
After taking the new THUNDERCHILD show to a string of solo live dates to develop its space-faring pageantry, a full live band is will be booking shows across the UK in support of the album through 2023 / 24. Contact hello@yearofglad.co.uk for bookings.
